Au Pair in Ireland
An pair programme is a cultural exchange programme. Au pair means "in exchange". The au pair stays with a family in a foreign country, learns the language, about the customs and the culture. S/He has her/his own room and is treated like a member of the family (including meals and pocket money). In exchange for being able to stay with the family, s/he helps with the children and the housework.
That means that an au pair is not a maid or an employee. That also means that the au pair is not on vacation, i.e. s/he has to fulfill the duties and working hours set by the family (within the Au Pair Regulations framework).
If you have decided to come to Ireland as an au pair, be open-minded towards the country, your host family, share with them their way of living and their customs - since this is part of the Irish way of life.
It's important to like children as they can be challenging and you will be spending most of the day with them.
Seriously try to improve your command of English and try to enjoy your stay. Especially in the beginning you may feel frustrated not being able to fully understand the people and express yourself. In addition to language difficulties, you may feel overwhelmed by the new surroundings, new people and customs/food to get used to. This is perfectly normal - just give it some time and be patient with yourself and others. Once you have settled in and found some friends, you won't doubt your decision of coming to Ireland! Thus you will really be enriched by the experience of your au pair-time.
We wish you a pleasant and successful time in Ireland!
